Have you ever been on court, ready to receive a serve, only to be completely caught of guard by the server? So much so that you nearly miss returning it because you’re still trying to figure out what the hell just happened over there?
I’ve experienced this a few times over the years, but my absolute favorite one was a teammate of mine, Nancy. She moved away a few years ago, but she was hilarious on and off the court, and has been greatly missed. Nancy’s serve was like nothing I’ve ever seen before or since, and I thank God that most of the time she was my partner and not my opponent.
She had a ‘process’ for serving…and occasionally it would kind of glitch, turning her into a live action GIF. She’d bounce the ball a few times and then drop into a crouch while she prepped to toss the ball. A lot of the times, it would be a smooth transition from that to actually serving. But occasionally she’d stay down there. It was like she was mentally going through each step of the serve and then got hung up somewhere along the way. She’d bounce up and down a little (still in the crouch) and I’d be waiting…and waiting… and waiting….and I’d kind of start giggling to myself, thinking she was stuck down there again. And just when she’d lured me into complacency, out of no where she’d pop up, toss the ball, and rip it at me. Most of the time, I’d just barely get it back. But occasionally, I’d still be snickering to myself, and she’d ace me completely. Crap! She freakin’ got me again! It was hard not to laugh at her…until she was laughing at me. Sneaky bitch.
I really miss her.
